Indian Food Industry Challenges Proposed Nutrition-Warning Thresholds in Supreme Court
India’s food-processors association asked the Supreme Court to review proposed red warning labels triggered when packaged foods exceed limits in at least two of three categories: added sugar, salt or saturated fat. It says the thresholds are too strict and should be measured per serving.
Who Benefits?
A per-serving benchmark can make products look different depending on how a serving is defined and makes direct comparison harder. The court challenge follows reporting that the government had already yielded to industry lobbying, while health advocates say the proposal’s two-of-three trigger leaves unhealthy products unlabeled.
